    Community Comes to the Rescue.

roof damage 2Recently we had the sad discovery that we had been broken into.  The thieves stole all our seedling growing equipment; lights, and organic feed as well as causing several hundred pounds worth of damage to the roof.  They ripped off the tiles to get into the propagation room and left us with a gaping hole in the roof.

Obviously this is annoying and very damaging to a business that is trying to grow food and work as a social enterprise for the good of the community.  We help lots of people and many people give their time for free as they see the good that we do.  We are a not for profit company and this massively impacts on our ability to to deliver our services.  We keep our prices very low to enable people to afford veg and plants, this means that we don’t have big surplices of money to pay for unnecessary expenses like this.

Although we were reluctant to share a bad news story, late on Tuesday we decided to take to social media to let our followers and fans know what had gone on.  Within 2 hours we had a phone call from Paul at Pad Letting Agency based in Grimsby and he had arranged with GRMS to provide us with FREE materials and repairs!

We are absolutely delighted by this generous gesture of community spirit.  The area sometimes gets a bad reputation, usually from the actions of a few individuals, but on the whole there are many kind and community minded people that work to make the area better place to live and work.

If you are reading this we hope you take note of these companies and use their services.  Your support of companies like this further strengthens the local community and encourages more companies to follow their lead.  We have been humbled by their actions, a true demonstration of how the community can come to the rescue.

  • Veg Box News 05.05.14

In the past week we have been working hard to prepare the ground on the back field ready for planting our spring and summer crops.

Work has also been under-way to get the second poly-tunnel skinned, prepped and ready for planting as this summer we are hoping for a bumper crop. As the weather is nice (at the time of going to print) this is the ideal time to get the skin on.

Last Saturday the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust ‘Turnstiles’ children’s group ran an activity on-site all about bugs and insects, the weather was lovely and the children (and parents) had a great time hunting for a variety of creepy crawlies. The group was also exceptionally lucky to be visited by Snowy the owl, the children stroked him and talked to his owner about what he eats and where he lives etc so thanks to Paul Hamilton for bringing him.

Our new volunteers have quickly settled in and Carol is working with VANEL to review the referral process so that we can take as many new volunteers as possible at this busy time of year. We have a new person called Brad starting this week on a ‘traineeship’ in partnership with Franklin College.

Elaine has been busy preparing the ‘Grimsby in Bloom’ planters (there’s a lot of them) which are due to be positioned around the town at the beginning of June.

The hanging baskets are also being planted,we will have general summer hanging baskets to order for £10 which should be ready for the end of May and edible ones with lettuce & nasturtiums etc for £3.50 each (available now).

The salad boxes and fruit boxes are proving to be very much sought after, please ring the office on 870609 to either change your veg box to a salad box or add additional items to your order.

We now have a range of plants available to purchase so please feel free to visit site and have a look round Monday to Friday between 9:00 – 4:00. We currently have a variety of herbs, grasses, lavender, heather, trees and shrubs as well as:

Sweet peas £1.00 for a six pack or 2 packs for £1.50

    Sunflowers 3 for £1.00

    Fushia £3 each

    Forget me not’s £1 each

    Hosta plants £3 each

    Perennials from £1.50 – £3.00

As always the free range eggs are ½ dozen for £1.50.

That purple sprouting broccoli last week was delicious! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. This week its back to one of our favourites; kale. We have supplied 2 types so you will either be getting a red kale or a green kale, we didn’t grow enough to give all the boxes the same type so there is a difference between the individual boxes. You will see also in the £8 boxes a lemon, remember serve the kale with a healthy squeeze of lemon juice after cooking; the vitamin c gives a delicious zing to the kale but also helps your body make better use of the nutrients. (Individual lemons for sale 35p or 3 for £1) We have also given you a taste of the season; sprouts. We will be giving you a stick of these with our Christmas Dinner box on the 24th December. Last year a stick of our sprouts was about half the price of what the supermarkets were charging. Keep looking out for our announcement at the beginning of December when we start to take orders for the Christmas Dinner boxes

Talking of Christmas, Kylie has been busy with making up some lovely looking gift food hampers; a great idea for an unusual present. Please do check out the pictures on our facebook and website. This year we will also have a limited number of fresh Christmas wreaths and some tables decorations. Again more details to follow.

On site we have had a a new raft of volunteers helping clear the weeds and do more of the tidying up. It’s interesting to watch volunteers over their time here; you see them go from slightly unsure sometimes with no ideas about plants and wild life. Slowly they get more confident and become part of the team, joining in with the tea break laughs, some even go onto start to grow their own veg at home. It is something we really encourage, grow your own, even if it a just a few windowsill herbs and some living salad. This year I grew some beetroot in plant pots as well as some radish, herbs and salad stuff in an old guttering. Its good to grow! We do sell plants as well as veg so you might even be able to buy some plants from us. We are currently selling winter hanging basket for £5.50 and also £3 for the hanging planter ‘socks’

PS – WE REUSE PLASTIC PUNNETS PLEASE WASH AND RETURN!

Don’t forget we sell FREE RANGE Eggs from Chickens NOT fed on GM soya. Most other non organic eggs will be from GM fed chickens.

NEW STOCK FOR THE PANTRY ARRIVED THIS WEEK. COME AND VISIT OUR PANTRY AND SEE THE TASTY TREATS!

  • We Love Bees

    We Love Bees

We love Bees. We love them so much that we have our own Green Futures Bees. We’ve made them little Green Futures B-shirts and they fly around the garden pollinating the plants and flowers and then they work very hard to make Green Futures Honey. (Obviously I am kidding about the B-shirts but it did provide an amusing image!).

A Quick search of Wikipedia says

Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role inpollination and for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea, presently classified by the unranked taxon name Anthophila. There are nearly 20,000 known species of bees in seven to nine recognized families,[1] though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants.

Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used as food for larvae.

Bees have a long proboscis (a complex “tongue”) that enables them to obtain the nectar fromflowers. They have antennae almost universally made up of 13 segments in males and 12 in females, as is typical for the superfamily. Bees all have two pairs of wings, the hind pair being the smaller of the two; in a very few species, one sex or caste has relatively short wings that make flight difficult or impossible, but none are wingless.

The smallest bee is Trigona minima, a stingless bee whose workers are about 2.1 mm (5/64″) long. The largest bee in the world is Megachile pluto, a leafcutter bee whose females can attain a length of 39 mm (1.5″). Members of the family Halictidae, or sweat bees, are the most common type of bee in the Northern Hemisphere, though they are small and often mistaken for wasps or flies.

The best-known bee species is the European honey bee, which, as its name suggests, produces honey, as do a few other types of bee. Human management of this species is known as beekeeping or apiculture.”

We will be selling the Honey in the veg boxes.
